He tried a very uncommon way of painting that turned out to be a success. He invented ways to build, fight and make art as well as many other things. He was one of the first people to try learn how to fly. His method of observing the world let him do all this. Da Vinci is surely a true renaissance man as he was one of the first scientists and pushed the renaissance along more than anyone else.
